Autism cases diagnosed this year indicate the number of cases grew six times when compared to the numbers that were available in the early 1980’s. This may be due to the fact that doctors are more attuned to this affliction today than they were some twenty years ago. In the past autism was not easily diagnosed, and the peculiarities of the disorder had been attributed to mental retardation more than a neurological disorder. Today, things are different and the medical fraternity is well aware of the symptoms of autism, which makes diagnosis easier.

There has been a great deal of research on autism. Unfortunately, the actual trigger of this disorder has yet to be identified. What has been found is that children are very rarely born with the disorder; this usually develops at 16 to 18 months and progresses rapidly as the child grows. The autism directly affects the way that a child perceived his environment vis-à-vis the reality; in the process the child loses the ability to communicate and interact normally with others. The child also becomes totally uninterested in self --both emotionally and physically.

No Self-Help Autism Book

There is a lot of documentation on autism and related topics. However, to date there is no autism book that can help directly the autistic person. There are reasons for this, though. The autistic adult or child are in the majority of cases are totally non-responsive to the outside world. It is most unlikely that they would take the interest and time to read through a self-help autism book, leave alone implement what it is written there. If left alone the autistic person will tend to repeat some favorite movement forever, forgetting about fulfilling even the most basic personal tasks.

In order to be of help, an autism book should actually address the people around the autistic person. They need guidance on how to cope with the autistic person, the society at large, and the rest of the family when faced with this crisis. In this category there is many an autism book to help the family of the autistic person cope with the pain they have to go through, and also teach them how to go about their life on a daily basis. There are many mysteries to be understood still, and this cannot be obtained through books. Fortunately, research studies are progressing in this direction as well.
